Massachusetts Teacher STEM Fair

Organized by Civil Air Patrol and Presidential Award of Excellence in Math and Science Teaching

Massachusetts educators and their families are invited to a STEM Fair event on Saturday, October 22 from 10am-2pm at Framingham State University! Come learn about different hands-on activities you can bring to your classroom, pilot a plane, watch a show in the FSU Planetarium, visit the Christa McAuliffe Center, and see Spot the Robotic Dog!

Schedule

10:00-10:30am: Welcome Address

  • Welcome address in the FSU Planetarium by event organizers and Kathy Kleiman, the author of Proving Ground: The Untold Story of the Six Women Who Programmed the World’s First Modern Computer.

10:30-2:00pm: Visit the Museum and STEM Tables

  • Find STEM tables run by Presidential Award of Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Awardees, Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members, and STEM organizations for information and STEM takeaway lessons.

10:35-3:30pm: Teacher Orientation Flights by the Civil Air Patrol [weather permitting]

  • Ever wanted to know how to fly a plane? Educators can sign up to be a part of the Civil Air Patrol (for a one time fee of $35), and along with other membership perks (free STEM kits to keep, books, newsletter, other resources), you have the option to fly a plane each year.

  • Time Slots: 11:15am-12:45pm (bus will pick you up at 10:35am) and 2pm-3:30pm (bus will pick you up at 1:20pm)

10:45-2:00pm: Planetarium Showings and Guest Speaker Presentation

  • 10:45-11:15am: Big Astronomy

  • 11:20-11:50am: Guest Speaker Presentation

    • Join us to hear a presentation by Kathy Kleiman. She is the ENIAC Program Project founder and co-writer of The Computers. Kleiman discovered the ENIAC programmers as a Harvard undergraduate and a female programmer in search of role models and inspiration.

  • 12:00-12:30pm: Habitat Earth

  • 12:40-1:15pm: Earthrise

  • 1:30-2:00pm: The Overview Effect

THIS EVENT IS PART OF MASSACHUSETTS STEM WEEK 2022

Massachusetts STEM Week 2022, October 17 – 21, is a statewide collaborative effort organized by the Executive Office of Education and the STEM Advisory Council in partnership with the state’s nine Regional STEM Networks, like MetroWest STEM Education Network, which plan and coordinate activities with local school communities, community leaders, and business partners.

  • The McAuliffe Center is located at the rear of O’Connor Hall on the campus of Framingham State University. The entrance to the O’Connor Hall Parking Lot is on Maynard Road. Click here for directions.
