The James Webb Space Telescope, or Webb for short, is a large, space-based observatory, optimized for infrared light, which will complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope. Launching in 2021, Webb will be the premier observatory of the next decade, serving thousands of astronomers worldwide. Webb will study every phase of cosmic history: from the first luminous glows after the Big Bang; to the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets; to the evolution of our own solar system.
